Deep Sea Diving @ Coast of Papua New Guinea

DONE BY: Rein | Groton School '15 | Scripps College '20

HOW OPPORTUNITY WAS FOUND:

My uncle is a deep sea filmmaker and he invited me to join his crew on a trip.

LENGTH: 2 months

LOCATION: Pacific Ocean, aboard a dive ship

FUN: ★★★★☆

PERSONAL GROWTH: ★★★★★

KIND OF PERSONAL GROWTH MOST EXPERIENCED:

  • Adjusting quickly to isolation and having no communication to land

DAY-TO-DAY LIFE:

  • 5:30am: wake up
  • 6am-9pm: 5 dives, reading in between, dinner then bed.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK/ACTIVITIES DONE:

  • Diving
  • Identifying fish
  • Studying species books

TOP TIPS:

  • You can sign up for a dive trip through dive resorts and get diving certified through PADI.
  • It can be quite expensive to go on a dive ship so diving from shore would be a better budget trip.

MOST MEANINGFUL LESSON TAKEN AWAY:

Isolation can be fun! And there's so many things to learn about the ocean.
