Managing My Social Media

DONE BY: Anonymous | Green Farms Academy '16 | Scripps College '20

HOW OPPORTUNITY WAS FOUND:

I've always loved fashion and being a style blogger was something I always wanted to experiment with but I never had the time or energy to really seriously think about it. After talking to a mentor I have in Manhattan who works in the media field, he said screw the unpaid internships and figure out how to work social media yourself. ( I'm really interested in going into media so I wanted to get experience working in that field) I did a lot of research on how social media works and especially Instagram and got cracking at creating a following for myself, as well as generating some really amazing engagement on posts.

LENGTH: July 2017-Present

LOCATION: New York City and Connecticut, USA

FUN: ★★★★★

PERSONAL GROWTH: ★★★★★

KIND OF PERSONAL GROWTH MOST EXPERIENCED:

I know a lot of people like to smack talk social media but I've really gotten a lot out of my work on Instagram. Hard work pays off and the results are tangible. I've always had a decent work ethic but I think this project is something that keeps me motivated on a daily basis and I've found my passion!

DAY-TO-DAY LIFE:

*5-10 minutes every hour are spent on Instagram implementing growth strategies and engaging 7AM- wakeup 8-9AM workout 9:30-10 AM read books relevant to work ( female entrepreneur books mostly)

  • 10am-11am: work on blog
  • 11am-12pm: paid job
  • 12pm-1pm: lunch
  • 1pm-2:30pm: blog/ Instagram whatever need to be done
  • 2:30pm-6:30pm paid job
  • 6:30pm- 8:30pm: email/ blog/ post to insta/ engage on ista

DESCRIPTION OF WORK/ACTIVITIES DONE:

My social media management was focused around Instagram, so I had to to find other accounts that were in my niche and engage with them or other accounts that would be interested in my niche.

HOW MANY HOURS OF WORK DID YOU DO PER WEEK? 28-40

*I worked for myself so I set my own hours ( highly recommend the self employed lifestyle) in total it was around 4-5 hours a day

TOP TIPS:

  • Working for yourself means that you get out what you put in.

MOST MEANINGFUL LESSON TAKEN AWAY:

DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY! Starting my own social media presence was actually super scary- the middle school girl in me was afraid people would judge me and think I was just some basic white girl showing off her clothes. But at this point I really don't give a fuck. I'm doing something I love and I'm funding it all myself. I work hard and see results, and I love (almost) every moment of it.
