TOP TIPS: 

If you want to volunteer abroad, my best advice would honestly be to do it through a group where you go with peers your own age. I went alone to Germany on a self organized volunteer thing. I had to find my own housing, and at times felt very lonely because I knew no one in the city and there was no forced interaction like in college or like in one of those group volunteer things.
