HOW OPPORTUNITY WAS FOUND: www.workaway.info

LENGTH: 8 weeks

SHORTEST POSSIBLE WORK COMMITMENT: 4 weeks

LOCATION: Taitung, Taiwan

FUN: ★★★★★

PERSONAL GROWTH: ★★★★☆

DAY-TO-DAY LIFE:

  • Surf in the morning
  • 10:00am ~ 2:00pm: Work
  • Surf or go into town

TYPES OF WORK/ACTIVITIES DONE:

Mowing grass on golf course, remodeling bathroom at the restaurant, helping move firewood to a nearby pizza shop for owner’s friend, bartending, cooking, surfing, doing dishes, kayaking, riding the moped (could borrow from the café owner, Fedé, if you had a license)

HOURS WORKED PER WEEK: 40**

**Other workawayers typically work for 24 hours/week, but James worked extra hours in order to be paid

PROVIDES:

  • A nice shipping container as accommodation
  • Dinner every night (if no dinner, would be paid about $4 to get dinner in town)
  • 1500 NT per week (about $30)

TOP 3 TIPS:

  1. Surf a lot
  2. Don't pet the dogs at the café
  3. Keep your room clean and try not to give Fedé too many reasons to get annoyed. He’s a nice guy—but if things don’t go his way, he can get a bit annoyed

 MOST MEANINGFUL LESSON TAKEN AWAY:

Don't fuck with a man's life work. If you're gonna go here, realize that this isn't a well established business that can afford something's going wrong. Fedé's still in the process of building it up from nothing; you have to respect that.

MORE NO-CRAP TALK:

Check out this restaurant nearby called Sunshine Breakfast. It's really good!
